Does Cornell have a Cognitive Science major? ›

Cognitive science is an interdisciplinary field that combines elements from psychology, neuroscience, linguistics, computer science, and philosophy, among other fields. Due to its interdisciplinary nature, it can indeed be considered a STEM major, although it leans more towards the 'flexible' side of STEM disciplines.

There is a difference between cognitive science and neuroscience. Cognitive science studies how the brain is organized, including thought processes and learning. Neuroscience studies the nervous system, including the brain, neurons, and cellular processes.

There is also a growing demand in the biotechnology and pharma industries for cognitive scientists who also took courses in biology and/or chemistry. Look for careers where strong analytical, research, problem solving and writing skills are needed, as well as understanding of how humans behave.

The cognitive science major also integrates well with the pre-med curriculum, and many majors go on to medical school. Our former majors include MDs with specializations in neurology, psychiatry, neuro-radiology, emergency medicine, and internal medicine.

Students may apply to enter the major in Cognitive Science at any point after the first year. CGSC 110 is prerequisite to the major. Interested students are also encouraged to take an introductory course in computer science, economics, linguistics, neuroscience, philosophy, or psychology.
